Cervical Screening Awareness Week

Cervical screening tips

Cervical Screening Awareness Week runs from Monday 17th June - Sunday 23rd June 2024.

The aim of the week is to promote cervical cancer awareness and prevention, and to encourage women to undergo cervical screening (smear tests)

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected in its early stages with a screening, and screenings save thousands of lives every year in the UK.

Cervical screening, which used to be called smear test, is a test to check the health of the cervix and help prevent cervical cancer. It's offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64.

We know cervical screening isn't always easy, see below for some tips to help you in your appointment.
- Ask to book a longer appointment, this gives you more time to ask questions and feel ready
- Bring someone you trust to sit with you in the waiting room or to come in with you during your appointment,
- Ask for a smaller speculum
- Wear a skirt or dress so that you do not have to remove all of your clothes from the bottom half.
- Talk to the nurse if you have questions or need support

You can also request an appointment first thing in the morning.

If you are overdue your appointment please book.
