Serious Mental Illness (SMI) Health Checks

People aged over 18 who have a Severe Mental Illness should have a yearly physical health check at their GP practice.

If you have a mental illness and take certain medications, these can put you at an increased risk of developing health problems.

It is important to have these checks to make sure that you are healthy on the medication prescribed; and to keep you living well and feeling as healthy as possible.

At your health check you will
- Have your blood Pressure taken
-Have a blood test to check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
- Get weighed
- Talk about smoking, alcohol, non-prescription drugs, diet and exercise.

Attending your health check will help in identifying any early signs of
- Diabetes
- Stroke
- Heart problems

Health and Care Portsmouth have produced this SMI leaflet to give you more advice

Or you can visit the Health and Care Portsmouth website for more information, including a video that explains why it is important to attend.
